Prince Edward Island is mourning the loss of Matt MacGrath, a beloved coach, mentor, and central figure in the province’s wrestling community, who passed away early this morning at the age of 46. Matt’s battle with cancer was long and arduous, and he faced it with the same resilience and determination he demonstrated in every judo or MMA match—giving it his all until the very end. His strength, both physical and personal, left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Matt was more than just a coach; he was a builder of athletes, a dedicated parent, a trusted friend, and a vital member of Wrestling PEI’s leadership. His tireless commitment and extensive knowledge of the sport helped shape generations of wrestlers and strengthen the sport’s presence on the Island. He played a key role in the development of athletes who achieved national success, coaching three Canada Summer Games teams and guiding many to medals, including several Island wrestlers earning Gold medals at the National level.
One of Matt’s proudest achievements was coaching his daughter, Keely MacGrath, to U-17 Gold at the Canadian Championships and securing a Silver medal at the Canada Summer Games. For those who knew him, this accomplishment reflected not only his coaching skills but also his deep dedication as a father and mentor. Beyond wrestling, Matt’s passion extended to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, and MMA, where he contributed his expertise and inspired countless athletes of all ages to pursue discipline, confidence, and respect.
Matt’s impact extended far beyond the mat, and his passing is felt deeply across Prince Edward Island and the wider sports community. Tributes from athletes, colleagues, and friends describe him as a determined, knowledgeable, and supportive presence who made everyone around him better. He is survived by his wife Melanie, their children, and a broad circle of athletes, friends, and colleagues who regarded him as family.
As the wrestling community mourns, many remember Matt MacGrath not only for his achievements but for the mentorship, friendship, and leadership he generously shared. His legacy will continue to inspire those he touched for years to come.
