John McDowell Shooting Death Obituary: Lebanon County PA Community Mourns Loss

Hubbard County, MN Death: Mourns Douglas and Tiffany Stewart After Deadly Train Collision

LEBANON COUNTY, PA— The coroner’s office has officially identified the man fatally shot during a police-involved incident on Wednesday, and newly obtained search warrants are shedding light on the complex case that culminated in the deadly encounter.

John McDowell, age 47, was pronounced dead at 9:20 a.m. at the scene located in the first block of Gable Drive in Myerstown. Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Ethan Brownback reports that troopers were executing a warrant related to a child pornography investigation when they were confronted by the suspect in a manner that led to the discharge of firearms. Fortunately, no troopers were injured during the incident.

CBS 21 obtained a copy of the search warrant that troopers had been attempting to serve at McDowell’s residence, revealing alarming details about the investigation. The warrant traces back to a September 2, 2024, arrest by the FBI Little Rock Division of an individual involved in the attempted production, distribution, and possession of child sexual abuse material. This individual was actively using the Kik messaging platform to recruit others into an “active group,” which investigators identified as being involved in sharing child exploitation content.

Further investigation uncovered that individuals in this Kik group were sexually active with children. To gain acceptance, members were required to verify their participation by producing illicit material. During the cyber investigation, authorities found conversations between McDowell and another user, “hrddad0823,” which revealed disturbing disclosures. In one exchange, McDowell admitted that he used to be “active with kids” but claimed he was no longer involved. When asked about a specific child, McDowell mentioned “6-Feb” and stated he had pictures of the child’s genitals.

Over several months in 2025, authorities received multiple cyber tips linking McDowell to possession and distribution of child pornography files, eventually tracking him through digital footprints. On January 7, 2026, investigators located his driver’s license, confirming his age as 47, consistent with the timeline of the conversations. Screenshots of messages further portrayed McDowell’s disturbing self-description, including references to himself as a “pedo” and admissions of inappropriate contact with a minor.

Troopers also examined McDowell’s Facebook profile and the Facebook page for “McDowell’s Pest Control,” discovering that two other individuals resided at his Gable Drive home. Surveillance continued over subsequent weeks, gathering evidence that ultimately led to the issuance of a search warrant on January 27. The subsequent attempt to serve the warrant on January 28 resulted in the tragic shooting and McDowell’s death.

As of now, the precise circumstances that prompted troopers to discharge their firearms remain unclear, and investigations continue to determine the full sequence of events leading to this devastating outcome.
