Gwinnett County, GA — A tragic shooting early Sunday morning has resulted in the death of a Gwinnett County police officer and critically injured a second officer during an incident near a hotel in the Stone Mountain area. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the officers were responding to a report of potential fraud at the Holiday Inn Express located at 1790 East Park Place Boulevard, around 7:30 a.m. When they arrived at the scene, gunfire was exchanged, and the officers were struck by gunfire during their interaction with the suspect.

The officers returned fire, wounding the suspect in the process. All three individuals – the two officers and the suspect – were transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Tragically, one of the officers succumbed to injuries sustained during the exchange, marking a devastating loss for the Gwinnett County Police Department and the entire law enforcement community. The second officer remains hospitalized in critical condition, with the suspect’s current status unknown.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken over the case, which is standard procedure in incidents involving law enforcement shootings. The agency is working alongside local authorities to piece together the events leading up to the deadly encounter.
