The Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified Shaylea Rae Gaona, a 21-year-old woman from Fort Wayne, as the victim of an early Sunday morning fire that tragically claimed her life. According to the news release, Shaylea died from smoke inhalation, and her death has been ruled an accident.
Shaylea was born and raised in Fort Wayne, the beloved daughter of Leobardo Gaona and Shayla Smith. She attended Carroll High School and was known for her vibrant personality that brightened everyone’s day. Shaylea worked at Dairy Queen in Huntertown, where she built many friendships and enjoyed engaging with customers. Her sarcastic, humorous nature often left those around her laughing uncontrollably, making her a joy to be around.
A creative soul, Shaylea loved painting, crafting, shopping, and spending time outdoors. She enjoyed fishing trips with her grandpa Rick and listening to music. She also developed a passion for cooking, especially seafood boils, which she was becoming quite skilled at preparing. Despite her young age, she found immense happiness in sharing special moments with her family, especially her son, Kyzir, who was just nine months old. Watching Kyzir grow brought her great joy and a sense of fulfillment.
Survivors include her partner, Malachi Stewart; their son, Kyzir Gaona-Stewart; her parents, Shayla Smith and Leobardo Gaona; sister Solana Gaona; brother Leo Gaona; grandparents Rick (Pat) Smith and Lisa Reader, along with many other relatives. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Scott Reader.
A Celebration of Shaylea’s Life will be held on February 6, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at FairHaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, located at 6557 N. Clinton Street, Fort Wayne.
