Derrick Bonham, Shooting Death, Weakley County Obituary: Weakley County Sheriff deputy killed in overnight shooting

MARTIN, Tenn. — Weakley County Sheriff’s Deputy Derrick Bonham, a dedicated husband and father of three, was tragically killed in a shooting early Friday morning, Sheriff Terry McDade announced in a press conference.

Derrick Bonham, a Greenfield resident, served with the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office for the past two years. He is survived by his wife and three young children. Authorities have not yet identified the suspect involved in the shooting. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and is leading the ongoing investigation.

According to an earlier statement from the Martin Police Department, Bonham was shot early Friday while assisting officers at a shots-fired call. Sheriff McDade explained that the suspect fired the first shot from her vehicle, which was parked at a nearby Pocket’s gas station, causing Bonham to fall to the ground. She then reportedly exited her vehicle and fired another shot at him. Bonham was rushed to Volunteer Community Hospital, where medical personnel worked tirelessly to save his life.

Despite their efforts, Bonham succumbed to his injuries. Sheriff McDade described him as a quiet, humble individual who was highly respected by his colleagues. “He was the kind of person you want to hire. He never caused trouble, and I don’t think I ever heard him raise his voice,” McDade said. The sheriff expressed deep devastation, emphasizing his sympathy for Bonham’s young family.

During the press conference, McDade did not release the suspect’s name but expressed strong emotions about the case. “I hope for the death penalty,” he stated, adding, “That’s just my personal opinion.” The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate, and limited information is available as the case remains active.
